About This Work

We invite you into the world of Richard Flavin, where the customs and natural landscape of the Hiki region quietly merge into a single, harmonious vision.
Born and raised in Boston, USA, Richard Flavin crossed the Pacific to live in Ogawa Town, in the Hiki region of Saitama Prefecture, Japan. While living there, he developed a deep affection for the local customs and natural surroundings that left a lasting impression on his inner world. This print collection presents twelve images—one for each month—meticulously carved with calm restraint yet remarkable precision, reflecting a full year of life shaped by tradition and nature.
These works could only have emerged from Flavin’s exceptional sensitivity. At the same time, it is precisely because he is not Japanese that he was able to perceive and express the simple, deeply rooted sensibilities hidden within Japanese culture.
As you view these prints, you may find a sense of nostalgia quietly resurfacing—memories of ways of life that may have almost faded from our consciousness.
